Rob Fitzel's Portfolio

The video below highlights some of my best images and animations from 2001-2009.

This portfolio is dedicated to the talented men and women who freely share their tools, models, and techniques so that others may turn their imagination into art.

Most of my art has been done with free tools such as Terragen, POV-Ray, PoseRay, DAZ|Studio, Bink, and Wings3D.

A brief description of each clip of the video appears below.

The Ascent (2003)
This video was made with Terragen. Part of the first segment is shown here - in the complete video, the camera soars through the clouds and continues into space. I synchronized the action with the theme song from the movie Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves.

San Filipe (2002)

Scene rendered in Terragen, using the new Water Works plugin.

Sophie the Jogger (2006)

The background was modeled and rendered using POV-Ray and imported as a backdrop into DAZ|Studio. The character was rigged and textured in DAZ|Studio, where the final scene was rendered. I used Paint Shop Pro's soft focus filter to give the image a slightly ethereal tone. This image is the only one in the portfolio with post-processing - all other renders were untouched.
Angry River (2001)

Image made with Terragen.
This image uses a USGS Digital Elevation Map of the Grand Canyon, which I flooded. Extreme water parameter settings gave the appearance of rocks in the riverbed.

Crystal Lake (2003)
Another Terragen video. The terrain is an almost completely flooded Grand Canyon.

The Den (2004)

A very accurate depiction of my real-life den. Everything is modeled in POV-Ray - this was my first experience with CSG modeling.

The Sense of Hearing (2008)

This image is based on "The Sense of Hearing" by Jan Brueghel the Elder, painted in 1618. The people and animals were rigged in DAZ|Studio. The background paintings were scenes rendered in DAZ|Studio. The stringed instruments (except the harp) were modeled in Wings3D. Trees were on-line freebies. All other objects were modeled using POV-Ray. Final render in POV-Ray.

Forest Maiden (2008)

The Knights Salute (2007)

The video was part of the wedding sequence in my movie, "The Black Robe." The characters were created in DAZ|Studio. I created thirty knight models - each one raising his sword slightly higher than the previous.  In POV-Ray, each knight model appears for one or two frames before switching to the next model, giving the illusion of motion. Rendered in POV-Ray.

New York Street (2008)

Buildings, bus, and street were modeled with POV-Ray. Trees were on-line freebies and textured with real-life leaves. Cars were on-line freebies. The couple in the foreground are 3D models created with DAZ|Studio. All other people are pre-rendered (in DAZ|Studio) billboards. This billboarding technique permits the inclusion of hundreds of people into a scene with little memory impact.
